By tracking migration, Microwave Telemetry is saving endangered bird species.
Microwave Telemetry manufactures electronic devices for tracking avian and marine species using cutting-edge technologies. The company is owned and operated by biologists with a drive to develop smaller and smarter devices necessary for the work of researchers worldwide.
Smaller GPS devices are enabling scientists to tag targeted birds, and monitor their flight patterns in ways that are much more precise than ever before. The information gathered is contributing significantly to scientists’ understanding of the ecology and behaviour of birds. As well as helping to find ways to protect endangered species.
For years, customers have asked us to find a way to provide them with more GPS positions. Now, our GSM product line achieves this goal and is likely to surpass the needs of the data-hungry researcher.

The environments in which the Microwave Telemetry devices operate are highly demanding. Hence, the demands on the specifications of Telenor Connexion’s solution were extraordinary.
Our continual effort of developing smaller and smarter devices is driven by the needs of scientists. By partnering with Telenor Connexion, we can now provide a global tracking and monitoring system to researchers worldwide. Dr. Lance JordanOperations Manager at Microwave Telemetry, Inc.
Telenor Connexion partnered with Microwave Telemetry to develop a robust, smart Managed Connectivity solution that would benefit scientists around the world.
Firstly, Telenor Connexion undertook a complete study of Microwave Telemetry’s products and the countries that the devices would be required to work in. Based on in-depth understanding of the challenges and needs, Telenor Connexion was then able to determine the type of bearer services that would provide the most cost effective solution and still provide the best coverage.
Telenor Connexion provided Microwave Telemetry with one SIM and one rate GPRS/GSM global solution. The key component of the solution is Telenor’s patented eSIM – a reliable, robust yet small SIM card developed especially for harsh environments.
The connected solution enables Microwave Telemetry to provide a worldwide tracking and monitoring system. Capable of tracking wildlife for thousands of kilometres, the system can actually cover almost all of the bird’s entire migration route.
Once attached, the connected devices collect data and monitor location. Via Microwave Telemetry’s web application, all the information is transmitted around the world to scientists and researchers on six continents.
Telenor Connexion is very proud to be part of Microwave Telemetry’s global tracking solutions as they play a valuable role in worldwide behavioural and migration studies and in the protection of endangered species.
Device size, durability, and extended temperature range is critical in our application for avian tracking and the Telenor Connexion eSIM, compatible with harsh environmental conditions, is half the size of a standard SIM card. Paul W. HoweyPh.D, President and Founder of Microwave Telemetry.
