Smart City IoT Use Cases

Smart city technologies present a compelling solution to the problems caused by urbanisation. For example, smart buildings can control light and temperature in real time for maximum comfort and efficiency using interconnected sensors and building control systems.

In addition, precise water irrigation systems with IoT sensors, including trickle and subsurface methods, greatly reduce water consumption and have the ability to integrate with utility demand response systems.

Demand response programs help reduce peak demand during periods of electrical supply constraint in the grid. Irrigation systems often utilize large electric pumps that can be controlled remotely to respond to utility needs and can aid in regional electric grid reliability.

Improving mobility and decreasing traffic congestion are some of the biggest challenges facing smart cities today. To meet this challenge many city planners are looking to smart transport solutions to reduce congestion as well as to optimise public transport.

IoT Connectivity Technology Requirements in Security

Security use cases have varying requirements, especially with regards to the data rate. Video surveillance, for example, has demands for high data rate, coverage and bandwidth as streaming video entails significant data traffic.

In addition, quality of service and reliability need to be very high to ensure uninterrupted real-time operation. High security requirements lead to heavy processing needs for data encryption and decryption. 4G and with more advanced requirements 5G satisfy those needs. Bandwidth consumption can be a challenge for 4G depending on the scale of camera deployments.

Wi-Fi networks are a less pricey option to facilitate surveillance use cases with high bandwidth requirements, exhibit however greater vulnerability to cyber-attacks. Security and safety alarms in turn send infrequent, small data packages and require high indoor coverage, cost efficiency, reliability and security. NB-IoT and LTE-M are suitable options to provide more robust connectivity in case the primary broadband connection fails or burglars use GSM jammers.

IoT Connectivity Technology Requirements in Building Automation

Building automation solutions, especially connected lighting, are mostly based on large-scale deployments of low-cost devices. Hence, connectivity technologies for building automation will need to be cost efficient and able to handle a high density of devices – for lighting solutions nearly every lamp is equipped with an IoT device.

At the same time, energy efficiency is critical to minimise maintenance of large scale deployments. Wi-SUN and Bluetooth Low Energy are the most suitable technologies with Wi-SUN likely to see bigger traction. Wi-SUN networks can cover an entire building or even campus, while also satisfying requirements for high energy and cost efficiency and the ability to handle device density. Bluetooth Low Energy with mesh has specifically been designed for a large number of devices and will become a major technology in building automation – now supporting longer ranges as well as energy harvesting.
