IoT Use Cases in the Automotive Industry

The Internet of Things is revolutionizing the automotive industry.

By 2025, connected cars could save 11,000 lives and lead to 260,000 fewer accidents every year, while avoiding 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and saving 280 million hours of driving.

IoT has revamped car inspection and maintenance capabilities and is enabling new varieties of in-car entertainment. Moreover, vehicular telematics is allowing long-range data transmission that has helped in the emergence of an IoT powered fleet management system.

Today, the automotive industry is deploying solutions such as in-vehicle infotainment systems, fleet management, navigation solutions, telematics, over-the-air software updates, predictive maintenance solutions, autonomous vehicles, driver-assistance Systems, vehicle-to-vehicle applications, and more. Nearly 60 models of plug-in hybrid (PHEV), fully electric (BEV), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are available now to consumers — and more are on the way

Based on our long experiences with IoT in the automotive industry and IoT in cars, Telenor IoT has frequently taken on the role as communication partner with our customers. We support customers in the different decisions and can collaborate in co-development. Telenor IoT’s depth of experience means we’ve established a unique network and trusted reputation within the automotive industry, and we can cross connect contacts.

Typical customers are manufactures of passenger cars, trucks and heavy vehicles, automotive suppliers, and micro mobility such as bicycles and motor bikes.

Connectivity Technology Requirements in IoT for Automotive

The connected car provides manufacturers, OEMs, vehicle owners and users with great amounts of data on driving behaviour, car performance, need for maintenance, and safety features such as eCall.

Automotive IoT solutions aim to improve the driving safety and experience while enabling data analytics for better product design resulting in successful connected car use cases. The main connected car use cases driving automotive IoT connections relate to fleet management, vehicle analytics and infotainment. High requirements on outdoor device radio range, reliability and security, mobility and especially data rate leave cellular connectivity, LTE-M/4G and in particular 5G, as the only long-term option for connected cars IoT. 5G networks with higher speed and lower latency will be the key to enabling advanced use cases such as autonomous vehicles and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication as well as innovative connected car services in the near future.
